Empower people with disabilities to make their own life choices
NPCCI has recently contracted with the Department of Mental Retardation (DMR) to further expand the ability of adults with developmental disabilities to direct their DMR provided resources by selecting the supports that individually meet their own needs, rather than having DMR assign those resources. This is part of a nation wide movement originated by families and advocates to empower people with disabilities to make their own life choices.
Support Brokers will work with participants in DMR’s Fiscal Intermediary Services (FIS) program to help them feel more comfortable making positive changes. The FIS program was established as way to allow DMR clients the ability to have self-directed funding. It is part of the nation wide self-determination initiative and is most successful when program participants feel comfortable enough to make changes and take risks. The developmentally disabled population is typically less likely to make changes on their own to their services because of the preserved “risk” involved in any change.
is the Support Brokers goal is to increase active participation in the FIS program by helping those enrolled to access the best resources to meet their needs, and making them feel comfortable and informed about changes they desire.
